A reflection on lilies of the valley, motherhood, and the beauty of becoming.
There are some paintings that begin with an idea…
and others that begin with a person.
This little painting began with my daughter, Camryn.
Lilies of the valley have always been her favorite flower, and because blue is her favorite color, I found myself pulled toward deep moody blues and soft glowing greens while creating this piece. The darker background almost felt necessary somehow… because beauty has a way of shining brighter when it has known contrast.
And maybe that’s why this painting means so much to me.
Camryn just turned eighteen.
In less than a week, she’ll graduate high school.
I honestly don’t know how we got here so quickly.
One moment you’re tying little shoes, brushing tangled hair, and watching tiny hands pick flowers from the yard… and the next you’re standing in awe of the woman your daughter is becoming.
Strong.
Wise.
Compassionate.
Resilient.
The kind of young woman who has walked through painful things and still chooses softness. Still chooses truth. Still chooses love.
As I painted these delicate flowers, I started thinking about how much lilies of the valley symbolize what motherhood often feels like to me now.
They’re fragile looking flowers, almost tiny enough to miss if you aren’t paying attention. Their blooms hang gently downward like little bells, quiet and humble, yet somehow unforgettable once you truly see them.
They symbolize renewal, humility, hope, sweetness, and the return of joy.
And that feels fitting for this season of our relationship.
Because motherhood changes as our children grow.
There comes a point where the relationship begins to bloom into something new. Something deeper. You stop simply raising a child and begin walking beside a young woman. You become a safe place she can return to for comfort, wisdom, encouragement, and truth. Not because she has to… but because love has continued to grow roots over time.
That kind of relationship is sacred to me.
Especially after everything we’ve walked through together.
I don’t share every hard detail publicly, but Camryn and I both know the storms we survived inside these walls. We know what it took to keep blooming anyway. And maybe that’s another reason this flower felt so symbolic.
Because lilies of the valley thrive in shaded places.
Even in darkness, they continue reaching upward.
There’s something incredibly moving about that to me.
Life can leave shadows on all of us. Pain changes us. Grief changes us. Hard seasons leave marks we never expected to carry. But even then, we still lean toward light. We still search for warmth. We still bloom.
And watching Camryn do exactly that has been one of the greatest honors of my life.
This tiny painting may be small in size, but it carries an enormous amount of love inside it. It holds memories, heartbreak, healing, motherhood, resilience, and hope for the future all layered together in thick paint and soft petals.
A reminder that life is fragile.
That time moves quickly.
That people are delicate.
But also… that there is incredible beauty in becoming.
In blooming.
In continuing to grow despite everything.
And maybe that’s what I hope this painting ultimately says:
That even after difficult seasons, joy can return.
Love can deepen.
Relationships can bloom again in new ways.
And like these tiny flowers reaching quietly toward the light…
we can too.
