Beyond the Horizon | The Beauty of Letting Go While Holding Onto What Matters

There are certain moments in life that almost ache with beauty because we know they won’t last forever.

A sunset fading into dusk.
A child pausing in wonder.
A season of life we wish we could stay in just a little longer.

When I painted Beyond the Horizon, I kept thinking about how often life asks us to stand in between two places — gratitude for what has been and uncertainty about what comes next.

The little girl standing on the fence became symbolic to me long before I fully understood why. She isn’t climbing higher. She isn’t rushing forward. She’s simply pausing… taking in the final light of the day before it disappears beyond the horizon.

There’s something deeply human about wanting to hold onto beautiful things.

We hold onto childhood memories.
People we love.
Places that shaped us.
Versions of ourselves that once felt safe and familiar.

But life continues moving forward whether we are ready or not.

And somehow, beyond that fear of change, there is also beauty.

I think that’s what this painting became for me — a reminder that even though seasons end, there is still hope waiting ahead. The horizon is not an ending. It’s an invitation into what we cannot yet see.

The warm sunset tones and heavy palette knife texture were important in helping communicate that emotion. I wanted the painting to feel alive with movement and light while still carrying a sense of stillness and reflection. Like a memory you can almost step into.

So much of my work revolves around fleeting moments, childhood wonder, faith, and the emotional connection we carry to places and memories. I want my paintings to feel grounding — like a quiet pause from the noise of everyday life. A reminder to slow down, reflect, and appreciate the beauty surrounding us before it slips away.

Beyond the Horizon is ultimately about trust. Trusting that even when we cannot fully see what lies ahead, there is still beauty waiting for us there.

And maybe that’s part of growing — learning how to hold gratitude for what was while still having courage to step toward what’s next.
